GAF vs. Owens Corning vs. CertainTeed: Best Shingle for Texas Weather
A roofer's honest comparison of the three biggest asphalt shingle brands — Owens Corning, GAF, and CertainTeed — for Dallas–Fort Worth homeowners.
Key Takeaways
- All three brands — Owens Corning, GAF, and CertainTeed — make solid shingles that perform well in Texas heat and hail. There's no clear "winner."
- The installer matters more than the brand. A poorly installed top-tier shingle fails faster than a properly installed mid-tier one.
- Owens Corning's SureNail Technology (Duration line) gives the strongest wind warranty of the three at standard install rates.
- GAF dominates US market share and has the broadest contractor network. Their Timberline HDZ is the most-installed shingle in America.
- CertainTeed's Landmark line is the longest-running architectural shingle on the market and has excellent UV/heat resistance.
- For Texas hail country, the impact-resistant (Class 4) version of any of these is what actually matters — more than the brand.
Homeowners ask us this question constantly: “Which brand of shingle should I put on my house?”
Here’s the truthful answer that I never see written down: at the major-brand tier, the differences are smaller than the marketing suggests. All three of these brands make shingles that perform well in Texas. The bigger variables are which specific product line you choose, whether you go Class 4, and how well it’s installed.
That said, there are real differences worth knowing.
The three brands at a glance
| Brand | US market position | DFW availability | Standout feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owens Corning | Top 3 manufacturer | Widely available | SureNail Technology, premium contractor program |
| GAF | Largest US shingle manufacturer | Widely available | Broadest color selection, largest contractor network |
| CertainTeed | Top 3 manufacturer | Widely available | Longest manufacturer track record, premium designer lines |
Owens Corning
The brand we install most often at Top Hat — we’re an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor.
Flagship product lines:
- Oakridge — entry architectural, best-selling residential shingle in their catalog, lifetime limited warranty
- Duration — flagship architectural with SureNail Technology (a reinforced nailing strip that improves wind resistance)
- Duration Storm — Class 4 impact-resistant version of Duration; qualifies for Texas insurance discount
- TruDefinition Duration Designer — premium architectural with designer colors
Texas-specific strengths:
- SureNail Technology gives a 130 mph wind warranty when installed with 6 nails — strongest standard wind warranty among the three brands
- Heat resistance is excellent — the polymer-modified asphalt holds up well to DFW summers
- The Preferred Contractor program (top ~30% of OC installers) backs extended warranties
Watch-outs:
- Color selection is slightly narrower than GAF
- Some OC products require specific underlayment to qualify for the lifetime warranty — make sure your contractor uses the spec’d materials
GAF
The biggest shingle maker in the United States by volume.
Flagship product lines:
- Timberline HDZ — the most-installed shingle in America, architectural with LayerLock nailing zone
- Timberline AS II — Class 4 impact-resistant version of HDZ
- Timberline UHDZ — thicker premium architectural with a high-definition look
- Camelot II / Grand Sequoia — designer/premium lines
Texas-specific strengths:
- Broadest color selection — over 30 colors across the Timberline family
- LayerLock + StrikeZone technology improves nail placement accuracy during install
- GAF Master Elite and Master Select contractor programs offer extended warranties
- Highest US contractor density — easier to find qualified installers anywhere
Watch-outs:
- The base Timberline HDZ wind warranty is 130 mph but requires specific install spec (6 nails, specific starter strip, etc.) — confirm your contractor follows the manufacturer specs to qualify for the warranty
- Class 4 (AS II) availability sometimes lags behind the standard line in color
CertainTeed
The longest-established of the three.
Flagship product lines:
- Landmark — entry architectural, the longest-running architectural shingle line on the market
- Landmark Pro — upgraded thicker version with enhanced color blends
- Landmark IR — Class 4 impact-resistant version
- Presidential Shake — designer/premium line with a wood shake aesthetic
Texas-specific strengths:
- Excellent UV resistance — Landmark uses a specific granule blend that ages slowly in intense sun
- Quality control consistency — CertainTeed’s plants have historically had the lowest defect rates in industry surveys
- Strong warranty transfer terms if you sell the home
Watch-outs:
- Smaller US contractor network compared to OC and GAF
- Premium lines (Presidential Shake) are noticeably more expensive than their Owens Corning or GAF equivalents

Wind warranty
All three brands offer 130 mph wind warranties on their architectural lines, but with conditions:
| Brand | Wind warranty | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Owens Corning Duration | Up to 130 mph | 6-nail install, SureNail engaged correctly |
| GAF Timberline HDZ | Up to 130 mph | LayerLock zone hit on all nails, 6-nail install |
| CertainTeed Landmark | Up to 130 mph | 6-nail install, hand-sealed in cold weather |
In practice, installation quality determines whether you actually get the warranty. Talk to your contractor about which nailing spec they use.
Hail / impact resistance
Standard Class 3 versions of all three brands handle typical Texas hail (1–1.5 inch). The Class 4 versions are dramatically better for severe events:
| Brand | Class 4 product | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Owens Corning | Duration Storm | Most common Class 4 we install in DFW |
| GAF | Timberline AS II | Slightly heavier shingle, similar performance |
| CertainTeed | Landmark IR | Comparable performance, sometimes pricier |
All three qualify for Texas Department of Insurance impact-resistant roof discounts — your insurer’s discount math is the same regardless of brand.
Heat resistance (Texas summer)
DFW heat is brutal on shingles. After about 8–10 years, you start to see brand differences:
- Owens Corning — polymer-modified asphalt holds shape well; minor curling sometimes after year 12+
- GAF — slightly thicker tabs in HDZ resist heat-related curling well; some discoloration possible
- CertainTeed — best UV resistance of the three in independent testing; colors hold up longest
For a Texas roof, all three will outlast their warranty if installed correctly and not battered by major hail. The brand makes <5% difference in actual lifespan compared to install quality and storm exposure.
Warranty transfer
If you sell your house in the first 10 years:
- Owens Corning — warranty transfers to new owner once for free
- GAF — same: one transfer in first 10 years
- CertainTeed — most flexible transfer terms in the industry
Talk to your roofer about how the warranty transfer works if you’re not planning to stay long-term.
What we install most in DFW (and why)
At Top Hat, we install Owens Corning roofs most often. Three reasons:
- We’re a Preferred Contractor — that gets you extended warranty coverage you can’t get through a non-Preferred installer.
- SureNail technology is genuinely better for high-wind areas (which includes most of DFW during spring storm season).
- Color availability and consistency in our supplier’s stock is reliable.
We can quote GAF or CertainTeed if you prefer either. We don’t push a specific brand if a homeowner has a clear preference — at the major-brand tier the differences aren’t large enough to argue over.

Is Owens Corning really better than GAF, or is that just marketing?
Both make excellent shingles. Owens Corning’s SureNail strip is a real engineering advantage for wind resistance. GAF’s color selection and contractor network are real advantages too. At the architectural tier, choose the contractor first and the brand second — install quality matters more than brand.
My contractor only installs one brand. Should I be concerned?
It’s normal — most contractors specialize in one or two brands they have certified relationships with (Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, GAF Master Elite, etc.). The certified relationship usually comes with extended warranty coverage. As long as the brand is one of the major three, you’re fine.
What’s the cheapest of the three?
Pricing varies by region and supplier, but in DFW the three brands’ base architectural lines (Oakridge, Timberline HDZ, Landmark) usually price within $0.50/sq ft of each other. The bigger price difference comes from product tier (entry vs. premium) than from brand.
Are any of these brands going out of business or being acquired?
All three are large, stable companies. Owens Corning is publicly traded; GAF is part of Standard Industries; CertainTeed is owned by Saint-Gobain. Warranty support has been consistent across all three for decades.
What about smaller brands like Atlas, IKO, or Tamko?
They make competent shingles too, but with smaller contractor networks and shorter track records than the big three in DFW. We sometimes install Atlas if a homeowner specifically requests it, but most Texas contractors stick with OC, GAF, or CertainTeed for the consistent supply and warranty backing.
Does my insurance company prefer a specific brand?
No. Insurers cover any UL-rated shingle. They care about the Class 4 impact rating (for discounts) and proper installation documentation — not brand.

A final note
For most DFW homeowners, the choice between Owens Corning, GAF, and CertainTeed is a matter of color preference, contractor relationship, and which Class 4 line your insurer recognizes for the discount.
Pick a reputable local contractor with strong references, ask what brand they install most, and let them quote you within that brand. Going outside their specialty usually means a less experienced install — and install quality outweighs brand every time.
